RICE: The End of an Ice Age

I knew it!! When I was in school we were taught that the body’s inflammatory response was appropriate for an open wound, but for a closed soft tissue injury, it was too intense. For this reason, with soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains, it was prudent to ice the injury to control and decrease swelling.

This always struck me as in congruent with chiropractic philosophy that the body has an innate wisdom that allows it to take the appropriate actions to maximize healing. Now 35 years later, the experts say that limiting inflammation in any way (with ice or anti-inflammatory medication) impairs the healing process.

Imagine that, the body knows what it’s doing!
